The Pillar System for Snoring for a More Relaxed Sleep

The Pillar System for snoring is basically a soft palate treatment. It stiffens the palate to reduce vibrations that cause you to snore. Experts say that in 70% of cases, the palate is the main cause of snoring.

The procedure is also known as Palatal Insertion or Palatal Restoration Therapy.

Pillar System for Snoring - How It Works

The “pillars” refer to the three small inserts the surgeon will place in your palate. The pillars prop up your palate to make it stiff.

Made of polyester, the material also creates a natural stiffening reflex in your palate as well. This reaction will remain for as long as the pillars are lodged in your palate.

Pillar System for Snoring - Pain & Discomfort

Unlike other systems, the Pillar System will not require you to undergo injections, nor will it require your palate tissue to be heated or removed. So compared to other surgical options, it will give you less discomfort.

Another advantage is that it requires hardly any recovery time. You can resume eating regular food and going about your daily tasks the same day as your operation.

All it takes is one short visit to the doctor and you'll see a marked improvement in your snoring inside 4 to 6 weeks. What's more, the possibility of this being a long-term cure is pretty good.

Pillar System for Snoring – Alternatives

You have at least two other kinds of surgical options that can do what the Pillar System does.

You may opt for injection sclerotherapy or radio frequency therapy for your palate. But these methods involve more than a single treatment.

Other procedures also carry the risk that your palate tissue may be damaged, leading to a breakdown of mucus membranes or leaking.

Pillar System for Snoring - Clinical Study

In a study presented before the American Academy of Otolaryngology in New York in 2004, a group of doctors from Norway reported the success of the Pillar System. The study involved 26 male and 8 female subjects, ages ranging from 23 to 67.

After 4 to 6 weeks, 92% of the subjects' bedmates said snoring wasn't a problem any longer. After a year, that figure dropped, but only to 70%. This is about the same as other surgical and non-surgical systems.

Pillar System for Snoring - Is It Right for You?

Although it's likely that your palate is the main cause of your snoring, there is still a 30% chance that it may be any of these other factors:

  • size of your tongue;
  • swollen tonsils;
  • big uvula;
  • obstruction in nasal passages.

Make sure these other causes are eliminated before you consider surgery. You may even want to get a second opinion before committing to a surgical procedure, no matter how simple, fast, and safe.
